How to form the letter A

Capital A is two slanted lines that meet at a point, then a bar across the middle. Lowercase a is a round shape first, then a straight line down its right side.

What to watch for

Children often draw lowercase a as a circle with a separate stick beside it. The line should touch the round part all the way down.

Words to say while tracing

Saying a word that starts with the shape, while the pencil is moving, links the letter to a sound instead of leaving it an abstract squiggle. Try apple, ant and alligator.
